I cannot think of a year when there were more films approaching that I could say I was truly excited for. But 2018 seems to be bursting at the edges with possibly great sci-fi.
Here are five films that I hope will be incredible.
A groundbreaking mission sends robotically enhanced astronauts through a wormhole. When the mission returns early, the space agency scrambles to discover what their astronauts encountered.
It’s already hit theatres in the US and while I doubt this will be groundbreaking in any way, I am sort of excited to see it. Mostly on the off chance that it could, in some way, be awesome.
The film sets up a lot of promise but can it deliver? It hints at some dark post-humanist cyber-stuff. So it could be good.
Time will tell.
Other than the trailer, all I know is that this is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac.
Annihilation looks a lot more promising in terms of set up than “The Beyond”. Depending on how the writers have handled the story it will either be a satisfying SciFi romp or a disappointing action-adventure flick. I usually go into films like this hoping for the best. The hints of actual back-story hold potential despite how trope-filled they are.
Ready Player One
Now you are talking. This could actually be really good. Unless they cock it up by forgetting that VR is only virtual. I’m fairly confident about this one mostly because it is based on a successful book by Ernest Cline.
while the first two on my list are films I’d not be unhappy to wait for the rental, Ready Player One is a film that I am probably going to want to see in the cinema.
Also, pop-culture references…
I am ridiculously excited for this movie. Not only could we see an astounding superhero movie but it looks like it could have some serious guts in terms of story and character.
Also, back when I was admiring Star Trek’s youngest character, I was also wanting to be this dude. Seriously, as a kid, I wanted to be The Black Panther because he was cool and he had a cool name. Of course, he did, he named after my favourite animal.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
I am equal parts nervous and excited for this film. Excited because it is Star Wars and I flippin’ love Star Wars. Nervous, because so many prequels tend to screw up the character journey for the sake of forcing the film to fit the Holywood formula.
In terms of storytelling, this could either be another resounding hit like the last “Star Wars Story” or the first film from the franchise that I hated. I’d rather it be great if I have a choice.
I’ve not got a trailer for Solo, so here’s my standard spaceship image.
