Overcoming pain through the power of community (hopefully)

Now, this might not be the most well thought out plan I have ever come up with but I hope through putting as much of my work online as possible, I can fight back against pain.

Wait, what?

Sorry, did I miss out on some context there? I live with a variable but consistently present level of physical pain. It sucks but that is not what this post is about. Make a donation to the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society if you are feeling particularly sorry for me.

What this pain means is that sometimes it is late evening before I am ready or able to be much use to anyone. Then I go to bed and sleep because that’s not optional, and the pain resets. No one said this was going to be a happy backstory.

So while I am having days where nothing gets done, nothing gets done. Are you following so far? That includes all sorts of interesting PHP based projects like extensions to make Author Buzz better, an interesting idea for using WordPress for Interactive Fiction Storytelling, and a few other things.

As far as all that code goes, I never planned on selling it. I was either going to just use it myself or share it with the community. So how about I just share all of it with the community?

Why not? Doing some wider good with my interests sounds like a great idea to me.

How does this count as “fighting back”?

I am glad you were paying attention. What I have been doing is adding my code based projects to GitHub. That way, should any other PHP or WordPress devs happen by, they can, should they feel like it, contribute.

In short, if anyone else thinks my ideas have merit, those ideas might get coded.

I might not be able to code at the rate I need me to right now but the whole world, well that should be no problem at all.

It only remains to be seen if I am even remotely right about other people wanting to see my ideas happen too. If it is just me… well, nothing much will happen.

Some repositories, you might like to help me with

BP-Report-Stuff – A buddy press module to allow reporting of objectionable content, spammy users, etc. This is a free – no premium bits – community project. This will make Author Buzz UK a nicer place to be by making it harder for scammy spammers to get away with it.

Datastore for storyteller – a gist of an abstraction that will enable me to make the interactive fiction I was talking about.

There are a bunch of themes I am working on. I have not added them to GitHub yet.

Fun with headers – a gist with no real redeeming properties other than it allows you to hide jokes in the HTTP exchange between browsers and your website where only true nerds will ever find them.

EU Auto accept cookies – because the EU cookie law is a joke and we all have better things to get on with.

You should see how full my Netbeans environment is… Or maybe you should not. There are a huge number of projects and it will take me ages to upload them all. The python stuff is pretty basic and not much use to anyone as I am just learning. Everything else will, eventually, get uploaded.

How to help

Fork a project you like the sound of. Poke about inside it. Write some code if any good ideas come to you (or correct my spelling so the comments are nicer to read) and send me a pull request.

Anyone can play. Anyone can contribute. Will you be someone who helps make cool stuff for us all to share?
